CDM CONSTRUCTION SAFETY
The Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2015 applies to all construction projects. The CDM Regulations defines construction work as:
“carrying out of any building, civil engineering or engineering construction work”
CDM Key Features includes
The construction, alteration, fitting out renovation, maintenance or demolition of a structure;
The preparation for an intended structure, including site clearance, exploration, and excavation
The assembly on site of prefabricated elements to form a structure or the disassembly on site of the prefabricated elements
The removal of a structure, or of any product or waste resulting from demolition or dismantling of a structure, or from disassembly of prefabricated elements
The installation, commissioning, maintenance, repair or removal of mechanical, electrical, gas, compressed air, hydraulic, telecommunications, computer or similar services which are normally fixed within or to a structure
Plant installation and commissioning projects
Protecting the health, safety and welfare of those involved in these activities is not only a legal requirement but also a key priority to enable and maintain progress on any project.
Black Rock Safety work in partnership to eliminate the potential risks of today’s operations, removing their associated costs. As a result, your organisation can focus its resources on improving performance, and achieving its full potential.

Because you already plan, manage and monitor the design phase, lead designers, e.g. architects, engineers and surveyors are ideally placed to undertake the principal designer role, however you may not have all of the required competencies, particularly in terms of health and safety experience..
Designers undertaking the PD role need to consider whether they have any gaps in their skills, knowledge and experience for the project and, if so, seek further advice and support. On more complex projects, designers may wish to appoint a specialist health and safety consultancy with knowledge and experience in the pre-construction phase and construction phase to help them fulfil their duties as principal designer.
Black Rock Safety have the capability to provide more bespoke principal designer advisor services to designers, who do not feel that they have sufficient health and safety knowledge, experience or ability to undertake the role without assistance.
Our CDM team can advise and assist the Principal Designer in discharging their duties to plan, manage and monitor the pre-construction phase and coordinate matters relating to health and safety during the pre-construction phase and construction phase of projects.
